iPhone Otter Box September 16th, 2009
Ok so having lost one iPhone to humidity damage I was not keen to lose another one ! A search across internet brought me to a US site offering the Otter box - a water proof case for your iPhone. 26US$ later and I had the case in my hands. Fitting is not so easy as there is an inner hard case and then an outer rubber case. The whole thing adds about 1cm to the dimensions of your iPhone but so far it has proved to protect the phone against water damage (rainstorms and cycling). Fingers crossed it can handle the humidity of jackets and cold of the mountains.
First snows ! September 16th, 2009
Was up in Valais last week and saw the first new snow. Col de Gentaines had fresh snow (3 cm) and we biked down to Ruinette and then on to Savolyere !
CH Avalanche statistics July 17th, 2009
The 2008/2009 season avalanche statistics have just been released. Last year there were 136 avalanche accidents resulting in 23 deaths (down from 2007/2008). 5 of these deaths were from snow showing accidents. Don't become a statistic in 2009/2010 - learn about snow pack, get a beacon and shovel and ride with a guide.
Swiss Snow - iPhone App July 17th, 2009
Just down loaded this App and like it ! The App offers snow reports for all CH resorts (I managed to find even the small places I sometimes ski on a bad day on the list). Fast and easy with a Favorites feature to take you rapidly to your regular rides.
iWeather.ch - iPhone App July 17th, 2009
Bit of a tech weather App but very complete (forecast, radar, pressure, wind). I like both the animated weather forecast and the fact that under "more" you can access the Swiss National Avalanche Hazard Map.
iSki - iPhone App July 17th, 2009
Snow reports and webcam links from around the world. US, Canada, Europe and Southern Hemisphere are all well covered (no Japanese info). Favorite button lets you jump to local resorts. Info is top line but good enough for a quick look. Personally, think iWeather.ch is better.
Verbier off-piste January 12th, 2009
Arguably one of the birthplaces of the modern freeskiing movement, Verbier also boasts a seemingly endless amount of awesome off-piste skiing!
iPhones and snow ! December 31st, 1999
Just a word of warning iPhones do NOT like the hot humid environment on the inside of your ski jacket ! Turns out these faboulous devices do not like water in even the smallest amounts. I killed an iPhone in my jacket and am now searching for a water proof case for the new one. In the mean time, I suggest iPhone's are best kept in ziplock bags !!!!
